Lions WR Jameson Williams Escapes Penalty Over Gun Situation

Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams was involved in a traffic stop last year while riding as a passenger with his brother. After it was discovered that Williams had a registered handgun, but lacked the proper concealed pistol license to carry it in a vehicle, he was placed in handcuffs. However, he was released without facing charges.

According to Detroit Free Press’ Dave Birkett, Williams will not face any NFL discipline for the incident, with a source confirming to Birkett that the matter is “closed.”

Following the investigation that led to Williams’ release, the Detroit Police Department initiated an internal inquiry to determine if Williams was given special treatment. A month later, a judge dismissed the request for a warrant for Williams, officially concluding the case.

While NFL policies state that a criminal conviction is not required for discipline related to illegal gun possession, it seems this issue is now resolved, and Williams can move forward.

In his three seasons with the Lions, Williams has faced two suspensions: one for violating the league’s gambling policy and another for breaking the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. Despite these setbacks, Lions head coach Dan Campbell has acknowledged Williams’ growth since being drafted as a first-round pick in 2022.

“He’s matured so much, and I get it, I understand where it’s at and I know it can be frustrating, and look, it’s frustrating for us,” Campbell said in October.

“It’s frustrating because I’ve got to answer these questions and the team is going to have to answer them when they shouldn’t have to, but ultimately, he’s taken huge strides, he’s made huge strides and I recognize that, and I think the team recognizes that, so I think he’s going to come back better than he was before.”
