De’Vondre Campbell Reveals Why He Left 49ers: I’m Rich and Don’t Have to Work Anymore

De’Vondre Campbell on quitting 49ers: I’m rich and don’t need to work again

San Francisco 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell walked off the field and refused to play during a game in Week 15, leading to the 49ers suspending him for the remainder of the season. He didn’t provide an explanation until Friday, when he shared a lengthy post on social media.

While Campbell’s post didn’t clarify why he left the team, he did express that he’s comfortable stepping away from the NFL after nine seasons and earning nearly $40 million.

“I’m not addressing anything. I’m rich and never have to work again, and I told Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch that when they FaceTimed me, pleading for me to return after Green Bay released me,” Campbell wrote.

Campbell had been a starting linebacker for the 49ers most of last season, but when Dre Greenlaw came back from an Achilles injury, Campbell lost his starting role. That seemed to upset him enough to quit — but he waited until the middle of a game to inform the team.

Campbell’s unpredictable behavior likely means no other NFL team will take a chance on him, but if he managed his $40 million well, he’s right that he doesn’t need to work another day in his life.
