Saints cut ties with former Detroit Lions running back after underperforming seasons

This move comes after two lackluster years for the backup running back. After a breakout 2022 season with the Detroit Lions, his performance has significantly declined.

He was the perfect complement to David Montgomery in Detroit. Williams brought speed and versatility, while Montgomery was the power runner.

The duo thrived, but Williams has struggled to regain his form since leaving Detroit.

Meanwhile, the Lions have found a solid match in Jahmyr Gibbs, who pairs well with Montgomery. Regardless, numerous teams will likely give Williams a chance to add depth at running back.

For the Saints, their primary back, Alvin Kamara, returned to his offensive player of the year form. He rushed for a career-high 950 yards and six touchdowns, while also adding 543 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Turning back to Williams, his two seasons with New Orleans have been forgettable. After leading the league in touchdowns with the Lions, his performance has drastically declined.

In two seasons, he managed just 470 yards and two touchdowns. He played 27 games and started only three. His production drop has been steep.

As mentioned, Williams stayed healthy during his time in New Orleans. Going from a 1,000+ yard rusher with 17 touchdowns to barely reaching 500 yards over two years is a significant regression.

Even with Kamara missing some time in 2023, Williams’ playing opportunities were minimal.

Entering the season, it seemed inevitable that he would be cut. For instance, Williams was considered a trade candidate during the 2024 training camp. Though he was never dealt, it was clear his future with the team was uncertain.

Though his two difficult seasons are a bad sign, many understand his value. He’s a reliable backup running back that any team could use.

In the right system, he could still perform well. At this stage of his career, however, he may be looking to join a team with Super Bowl aspirations. After being owed $3.2 million by the Saints, several teams might offer him the minimum salary for a shot at a championship.

Despite the struggles in the past two seasons, his potential remains.
