St. Louis County officials greenlight using Rams money to fund election-related expenses.

CLAYTON — On Tuesday, the St. Louis County Council approved using $520,000 from the Rams settlement funds to place a proposal on next month’s election ballot.

Proposition B would allow the council to dismiss county department heads if five out of seven council members agree. However, placing such measures on the ballot incurs costs.

These costs cover payments for poll workers, renting trucks to transport equipment, postage, and other expenses, according to Rick Stream, the Republican director of the county Election Board.

Only Democratic Councilwoman Lisa Clancy, from Maplewood, opposed using settlement funds for the ballot measure.

In 2021, the county received $169.3 million from a $790 million lawsuit settlement over the NFL team’s move to Los Angeles.

Additionally, the council passed a rule requiring approval before county funds can be used to educate the public on ballot initiatives. Previously, the county spent funds on such efforts, including a $300,000 “educational” campaign about a marijuana sales tax question in 2023.
