Jets’ Sauce Gardner Explains How He Prepared DJ Reed for His New Role with the Lions
This offseason, the New York Jets brought in a former Detroit Lions coach, Aaron Glenn, who returned to his roots. However, they also lost a key defensive player, as cornerback DJ Reed chose to sign with Glenn’s former team. With Glenn’s departure, the Jets must adapt without a player who frequently ranked among Pro Football Focus’ top 10 at his position. Despite this challenge, they aim to maintain their strong defensive identity under Detroit’s former defensive coordinator. On Saturday, the Jets’ star cornerback, Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, humorously revealed how he unknowingly helped Reed get ready for his new role in Detroit.
“It’s crazy because I showed him how to do the blade dance when we was in NY just for him to go to Detroit lol,” Gardner posted on X. “I was culturing my dawg for Detroit without even knowing.” His reference was to a popular Detroit hip-hop dance linked to the city’s culture of “bossing up” and getting serious about success.
Reed will have to quickly adapt to the defensive system of Detroit’s new coordinator, Kelvin Sheppard. With former starter Carlton Davis III now in New England, the Lions remain focused on their Super Bowl aspirations under head coach Dan Campbell and quarterback Jared Goff.
