Pistons’ J.B. Bickerstaff Calls Out Refs Post-Game: ‘The Level of Disrespect Was Unacceptable’
Following a 113-107 defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night, Detroit Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff did not hold back in expressing his frustration with the officiating.
Bickerstaff was direct and outspoken while addressing reporters after the game.
“I’m disgusted by the way that game was officiated,” Bickerstaff said in a video shared by Eric Vincent of Clutch Points. “The level of disrespect was above and beyond. A player trips over his own teammate’s foot, and they review us for a hostile act. An elbow is thrown at our chest and neck area, and I simply ask them to review it—just to show us the respect of taking a look. But no one was willing to do that.
“The disrespect has gone far enough,” he continued. “I will not allow our players to be treated this way. I tried to have a conversation with an official, but he was busy arguing with Mark (Thunder coach Mark Daigneault). The moment I said his name, he yelled at me to stop talking.”
Statistically, both teams had similar shooting performances, with Oklahoma City making 43 of 89 attempts and Detroit hitting 42 of 88. The Pistons actually shot better from three-point range, going 14-for-33, while the Thunder made 10 of 34. However, Bickerstaff pointed out that Oklahoma City had a clear advantage at the free-throw line, converting 17 of 22 attempts, compared to Detroit’s 9 of 13. Although both teams had nearly the same number of fouls (20 for OKC, 21 for Detroit), the Pistons were hit with five technical fouls.
“We know we play a physical game and bring intensity,” Bickerstaff said. “I coach with passion, and our players are fully engaged. We understand that. But we also deserve respect. We’re working hard to develop young players, and they’re giving everything they have. The least we ask is to be officiated the same way as everyone else in the league.
“What happened tonight was unacceptable. It was a disgraceful display of disrespect toward our team and what we’re trying to accomplish.”
