Roy Lopez Drops Shocking 7-Word ‘Truth Bomb’ on Dan Campbell After Signing with Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions’ newly signed defensive tackle, Roy Lopez, recently expressed his admiration for head coach Dan Campbell’s imposing physique. During a press conference on March 13, 2025, Lopez humorously remarked, “I didn’t know he was that big… I knew he played, I didn’t know he could still play!”

Campbell, a former NFL tight end known for his rugged playing style, has instilled a culture of toughness and resilience in Detroit. Lopez’s lighthearted comment reflects the respect players have for Campbell’s enduring athletic presence.

Lopez, who has a background in wrestling, brings a unique skill set to the Lions’ defensive line. He started wrestling at the age of three and became a two-time state champion with a 113-3 record. This wrestling experience contributes to his effective pad level, leverage, and hand techniques on the football field.

In the 2024 season with the Arizona Cardinals, Lopez started 16 games, recording 28 tackles, 18 pressures, four tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, three passes defended, a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. His decision to join the Lions was influenced by the team’s aggressive defensive style. Lopez noted, “I think the biggest thing is to join a room that on tape when you watch them, you know they play with their hair on fire. They have the juice and the energy. As a defensive lineman, to join a room like that, it’s a no brainer.”

Beyond his playing career, Lopez aspires to transition into coaching and sees Campbell as an exemplary mentor. He expressed his eagerness to learn from Campbell, stating, “I look to coach one day when I’m done playing, and to be able to learn from Dan Campbell, like that speaks for itself.”

Lopez’s addition to the Lions not only bolsters their defensive line but also brings a player eager to embrace and contribute to the team’s spirited culture under Campbell’s leadership.
