Detroit Lions

Davenport faces intense pressure to deliver with Lions next year.

The Detroit Lions haven’t made many major outside acquisitions this offseason, which is surprising given their perceived defensive needs.

Many thought the team needed a proven pass rusher, and they did secure one early in free agency—but it was a familiar face.

Marcus Davenport re-signed on a one-year deal, aiming to prove that the injuries that derailed his 2024 season were just an unfortunate setback.

Fans were frustrated when he went down after just two games, but Davenport himself was even more disappointed. Watching from the sidelines while his teammates carried the burden has fueled his motivation for 2025.

“It was horrible. Another year of sitting out early and having to watch my guys take on the workload I was supposed to handle.

With so many setbacks, I had to focus on myself. Right now, I’m doing everything I can to be ready for them.”

Davenport hopes his preparation will help him build the consistency needed to elevate his game.

“The biggest thing, especially after missing so much time, is maintaining consistency.

Last year, they gave me steady reps leading up to the season, and by the first game, I felt great. I know the only way to get back to that level is through reps.”

Detroit is counting on him to bounce back, and with few outside veteran additions, the pressure is on for him to deliver. The team hopes his offseason work will put him in a position to be reliable and productive.

This year, Davenport will pair with Aidan Hutchinson to strengthen Detroit’s pass rush.

Having Hutchinson as a teammate is an advantage, but Davenport knows none of it will matter if he can’t stay on the field.

“For some reason, every time I think about playing with Aidan, I take a step back. I need to get on the field first.

I have to prove I can stay healthy, and once I do that, everything else should fall into place. If I prove it to myself, the rest will take care of itself.”

His comments make it clear that he understands the expectations in Detroit.

The Lions are relying on him for big contributions, and if he can stay healthy, he could become the ideal running mate Hutchinson has been waiting for.
