$7 million star falls short as Duke 5-star commit claims high school player of the year
Duke 5-Star Commit Edges $7 Million Star for High School Basketball Player of the Year
The race for this year’s Gatorade National Player of the Year award was intense.
Ultimately, the honor went to five-star Duke commit Cameron Boozer, the son of NBA legend Carlos Boozer.
This marks Cameron’s second time winning the award, having previously earned it in his sophomore season in 2023. He now joins the ranks of LeBron James, Greg Oden, and Brandon Knight as two-time winners.
“It’s a blessing, first of all, to win,” Cameron told USA Today.
Notably, Cameron managed to edge out BYU signee A.J. Dybantsa for the honor.
Dybantsa, who is reportedly set to receive $7 million in NIL money to play for BYU next year, is widely regarded as the top recruit in this year’s class.
However, Cameron is not far behind and has led Columbus (Miami) High School to four straight state championships in Florida.
Cameron, like Dybantsa, is projected to be a top-five pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Next season, Cameron and his twin brother, Cayden, will both play for Duke, following in their father’s footsteps. Last spring, current Duke freshman Cooper Flagg earned Gatorade National Player of the Year honors.
Kevin Love, a Miami Heat legend, announced the award to Cameron on Tuesday morning.
“I love that Cam embraces the process. He really leans into being a great teammate and leader. I think that’s a huge part of what the Gatorade National Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year is about,” Love said to USA Today. “It’s not just about what you do on the court; it’s about your impact in the community, with your teammates, and in the classroom.”
Cameron Boozer is also expected to see significant NIL earnings, with On3 estimating it could reach around $1.6 million.
