As a mother of four, Kelly Stafford knows that sometimes, tough parenting decisions have to be made.
“I have two kids—I won’t name names—but they’ve decided they run the world, think they know best, and now have major attitude,” Kelly admitted. “I’m exhausted.”
While she didn’t specify which children she meant, Kelly and her NFL quarterback husband, Matthew Stafford, are parents to twin daughters, Sawyer and Chandler, 7, whose birthday falls on March 31. They also share daughters Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 4.
“This has been an ongoing struggle for the last few months as their attitudes have escalated,” Kelly continued. “I’m finding it hard to manage. I’m usually the enforcer, probably the ‘mean’ parent. But now Matthew has joined in. We tried the ‘good cop, bad cop’ approach, but it’s clearly failing because nothing has changed.”
During the podcast, Kelly revealed that her daughters had been sent “to their room.”
“They’ve been in there for an hour and will stay until dinner,” she added.
The situation had gotten so frustrating that Kelly even changed the way she spoke to them.
“Honestly, I’ll admit it—I used a few curse words,” she said. “That was one of the first times I’ve done that in front of them, but I just said, ‘This is bulls— what you’re doing.’”
With a birthday approaching, Kelly and Matthew decided to take action.
” We told them, ‘The birthday party is off. We can’t celebrate you right now because of your behavior. We love you, but we don’t think a celebration is appropriate,’” Kelly recalled. “That was genuinely how Matthew and I felt.”
Kelly added, “As a parent, that’s tough. It was a really hard call to make. It hurts you as much as it hurts them. They’re getting older, and soon enough, they won’t even want birthday parties—just gifts and outings with friends.”
But not long after making that decision, Kelly and Matthew had to change their plans when they realized, “we couldn’t get our deposit back.”
“Could we have just accepted the loss? Yes,” Kelly admitted. “But then we thought, ‘Maybe this is a sign.’”
She continued, “I had to tell them the party was back on. But I made sure they knew: ‘This is not because you changed your behavior. It’s only because Mommy and Daddy couldn’t get our money back.’”
