Get to Know ex Detroit’s lion Matthew Stafford’s Four Daughters: Sawyer, Chandler, Hunter, and Tyler
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is a devoted father to four daughters: Sawyer, Chandler, Hunter, and Tyler.
After the team clinched a 23–20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the new champion immediately reunited with his kids for a joyful celebration. A video posted by the NFL on Instagram showed Matthew’s daughters happily playing in blue and yellow confetti, with their dad joining in and their mom Kelly Stafford smiling nearby.
Earlier that same week, the quarterback opened up about how much his family means to his career. “I wouldn’t be in this position without them,” Matthew told PEOPLE while reflecting on his trade from the Detroit Lions. “I never would’ve asked for a trade unless I had their full support.”
Matthew shared that some people have asked if they’ll try for a boy, but he’s perfectly happy being a Girl Dad and says his daughters have taught him patience.
“It’s honestly the best part of my life,” he said in a Rams.com Q&A from 2021. “It’s changed me in so many ways. … You don’t really know the feeling until you become a parent, and I’ve been lucky enough to experience that four times. Four beautiful girls. I’m very fortunate.”
Here’s a closer look at Matthew Stafford’s children: Sawyer, Chandler, Hunter, and Tyler.
Matthew and Kelly became parents to twin daughters Sawyer J. Stafford and Chandler Page Stafford on March 31, 2017.
The couple first shared their pregnancy in a sweet Instagram post in October 2016, featuring their dogs Marley and Champ. After facing fertility struggles, Kelly underwent IVF with Matthew’s full support.
“It was a tough experience, but lots of families go through it and find ways to get through it. IVF was a blessing for us,” Matthew said on his wife’s podcast
Sawyer and Chandler frequently wear matching outfits, from infant onesies to vintage 1950s Halloween costumes.
The twins also take part in cheer and tumbling, much like Kelly, who cheered at the University of Georgia. They’ve even played a little T-ball, following their dad’s own love of baseball in high school.
When they started Pre-K in August 2021, Kelly reflected on their growth and how fast time had flown.
“I feel like we were just in Michigan waiting for them to arrive,” she posted on Instagram. “Now they’re school kids. It all happened so fast. Happy first day of school to my oldest girls.”
Now in first grade as of June 2024, both girls are already dreaming big — Sawyer hopes to be an artist, while Chandler wants to play professional soccer.
Hunter Stafford, 6
Kelly revealed her third pregnancy during a beach vacation in April 2018. In the Instagram caption, she shared that she’d surprised Matthew with the news on Christmas Day.
“I can’t keep it in anymore,” she wrote alongside a beach picture of her with a baby bump, Matthew, and the twins.
The Staffords’ third child, affectionately called “Huntie” by her mom, is known for her spunky personality and often appears on Kelly’s social media dancing or posing for fun. Like her sisters, Hunter also loves cheer and tumbling.
Besides sports, she’s taken an interest in football, thanks to her dad’s influence. “She always wants to know what’s going on during the games,” Kelly said on Instagram in July 2023. “I love that one day when Matthew retires, he’ll have her to enjoy football with ❤️.”
When the family was expecting baby Tyler, they wondered how Hunter would handle the change — but she quickly stepped into her new role with love and enthusiasm.
“Tyler is HER baby,” Kelly wrote in a July 2020 post about Hunter. “Every morning she asks where Tyler is. When Tyler cries, she finds a pacifier, and if I’m holding her, Hunter wants in.”
Matthew and Kelly welcomed their youngest daughter, Tyler Hall Stafford, on June 26, 2020.
She was born during the unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, making the experience even more unique for the Staffords.
“It’s already a challenge to have a baby, whether it’s your first or your fourth,” Matthew shared in a 2021 video for Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. “Doing it during a pandemic adds a whole new layer.”
Thankfully, Tyler was surrounded by love and encouragement. As she grew, her parents noticed she was ahead of the curve in development. At seven months, she ranked in the 93rd percentile for height.
Since then, Kelly has posted moments from Tyler’s busy and curious little life. In a July 2022 video, she was caught trying to open a pantry after being told she’d had enough snacks.
By August 2024, Tyler was showing even more boldness, taking on a ropes course in an Instagram clip while Kelly cheered her on. She also keeps up with her big sisters in activities like swimming, arcades, and soccer.
When not supporting her dad at training camp, Tyler loves her mommy-daughter time with Kelly.
In May 2024, ahead of Mother’s Day, school-aged Tyler surprised Kelly with a heartfelt card and a fun day on the playground just for them.
“Spent the day with my baby girl,” Kelly captioned the video. “She always makes me feel like the most loved person in the world.”
