Tom Izzo Admits He “Failed” Former 5-Star Prospect Who Decided to Leave Michigan State.
The Michigan State Spartans won the Big Ten’s regular season championship but failed to capture the Big Ten Tournament championship prior to their time in the NCAA Tournament this March.
The Spartans made it to the Elite Eight, eventually falling to the tournament’s number one overall seed, the Auburn Tigers.
Following the Spartans’ tough loss to the Tigers, coach Tom Izzo suffered unexpected losses in the transfer portal including former five-star power forward Xavier Booker.
On Thursday, Izzo made a stark admission about what happened with Booker that sounded personal to the 2000 national championship winning coach.
“I failed, I failed,” Izzo said. “I love him, I love Book.
“They day he came in with his family was a very difficult day for all of us…I couldn’t get enough out of him.
“That’s not all his fault, that’s my job, I do get paid for that, and I did not get enough out of him.”
Izzo became the Big Ten’s all-time winningest coach this season, surpassing former Indiana coach Bobby Knight.
The 6-foot-11, 240-pound Booker hails from Indianapolis and averaged 4.7 points and 2.2 rebounds with the Spartans while averaging 12.8 minutes per game.
He committed to fellow Big Ten program UCLA this week, joining Mick Cronin’s team in Los Angeles.
Michigan State now must reload with the Big Ten getting stronger. Conference foe UCLA is the favorite to land Booker in the transfer portal, which could make life even tougher on Izzo and the Spartans next season.
