With the offseason now in full swing, Michigan State basketball has addressed some key needs in the transfer portal, picking up two plus shooters who play shooting guard and small forward.
Trey Fort and Kaleb Glenn were solid additions to a team that lost Tre Holloman, Jaden Akins, Frankie Fidler, Jase Richardson, Xavier Booker, Szymon Zapala, and Gehrig Normand. But there is still a move that Tom Izzo needs to make to ensure that the Spartans don’t drop off completely.
Michigan State does bring in Cam Ward and Jordan Scott and Kur Teng is projected to take a big step at the shooting guard position to make up for the losses of Holloman, Akins, and Richardson.
But there’s one glaring need that needs to be addressed: the backcourt.
Yes, Izzo has Jeremy Fears Jr. leading the way, but outside of him, Teng is the only other backcourt piece returning from last year while Fort is also a shooting guard who is the projected starter there. But three guys manning a backcourt is just not ideal, especially when the Spartans were four deep a year ago with all four having the ability to run point. Now only one guy is a true point guard.
Now, Izzo needs to add another guard whether it’s in the transfer portal or via the 2025 class with a recently-decommitted guy like five-star Darius Adams who would do the trick.
If Izzo can land a backup point guard or another combo guard who could play 20-plus minutes and take some pressure off both Fort and Fears, the team will be set up to succeed in 2025-26. The options are dwindling by the day, but that’s the last thing standing between the Spartans and a legitimate repeat effort next season.
I, for one, wouldn’t be too upset if Jase Richardson decided to return.
