Kelly Stafford Explains Why NFL Draft Picks Should Leave Their Girlfriends at Home — Just Like Her Husband Did

Kelly Stafford, wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, also shared if she was present with him on his NFL Draft night.

The 35-year-old podcast host offered her opinion on top draft prospects bringing their significant others to the NFL Draft during an episode of The Morning After that aired on Thursday, April 24.

Kelly’s comments came after co-host Hank Winchester asked if she had been in New York when Matthew Stafford was selected first overall by the Detroit Lions in 2009 — she responded “no,” then elaborated.

“I don’t get why guys do it because, if they get drafted, and you have your whole family at the draft, and the girlfriend is in the draft pictures, and later the girlfriend’s gone,” she said.

” You’re left with draft pictures that include a random girl. She might not feel random at the time, but she could be random later on,” Kelly continued. “It’s definitely something to think about.”

Matthew, now 35, plays quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams. He and Kelly first met at the University of Georgia before marrying in 2015. They now have four daughters: Sawyer, Chandler, Hunter, and Tyler.

Expanding on her viewpoint, Kelly compared the situation to a wedding party and whether to include a sibling’s partner in photos if they aren’t engaged, pointing out breakups but permanent photos.

“It’s like putting your brother’s girlfriend in the wedding without an engagement — and then later… You’re stuck with family pictures including the brother’s ex,” she said during the podcast.

Winchester then asked Kelly if she was “upset” about not being with Matthew during the draft. She replied, “I didn’t really grasp it at the time, but now that I have daughters, I get it.”

Kelly finished by saying, “I have no advice for any girlfriends attending, because I didn’t go.”

The 2025 NFL Draft began round one of three on Thursday, April 24. Several top prospects brought their partners as dates to the big event held at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

One was Travis Hunter, who appeared with his fiancée, Leanna Lenee, on the red carpet before the draft started. She hugged him after he was picked second overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars, just behind top pick Cam Ward, selected by the Tennessee Titans.

The former Colorado Buffaloes standout wore a vivid pink jacket over a black shirt and matching pants, while Lenee donned a strapless black gown. They also posed for photos with Hunter’s mother, Ferrante Edmonds.
