One NFL analyst and insider believes the Los Angeles Rams could soon be seeking a replacement for Matthew Stafford.
Although it’s been several years since Matthew Stafford wore a Detroit Lions jersey, many fans still follow his journey. From 2009 to 2020, Stafford was Detroit’s unquestioned starter, and while he never took the team to a Super Bowl, he’s still held in high regard. Jared Goff may be the guy now, but following Stafford’s career can feel a bit like checking in on an old flame.
Stafford is now set to return to the Los Angeles Rams for another year. At 37, he signed a new deal with the Rams during the offseason, but questions remain about how long he’ll actually stay.
An NFL writer and analyst recently included the Rams among the teams likely to start searching for a new signal-caller in the near future.
In a Bleacher Report article dated May 9, NFL analyst Brad Gagnon assessed each team’s urgency after the 2025 NFL Draft to find a future quarterback. His evaluation focused on “age, career path, experience, contract situation, injury history, and team direction.”
In the article, he lists a few teams as “top candidates to seek a franchise quarterback next offseason—or sooner.” The Rams are one of those teams mentioned.
“Stafford is returning for another go, but there’s a solid possibility he’ll retire after this year,” Gagnon writes. “The Rams could also opt to part ways if they no longer see value in keeping an aging, costly quarterback whose passer rating is 91.8 since 2022.”
He also identified the team most likely in need of a quarterback: the Pittsburgh Steelers. That makes sense, considering they’re holding out hope for Aaron Rodgers.
Stafford does have strong support from Colin Cowherd. During the May 7 edition of “The Herd,” Cowherd suggested Stafford could eventually surpass Rodgers in overall legacy. An exaggeration? Perhaps.
“Stafford’s never going to worry about grocery bills. But he might’ve had trouble behind the Giants’ O-line. This is a savvy move,” Cowherd said. “My belief has always been if Matt Stafford makes it to and wins another Super Bowl—and I believe around six teams could get him there—the Rams are one of them.”
He continued, “I believe Stafford will ultimately be seen as greater than Aaron Rodgers. Look at the numbers since the 2021 playoffs. Matt’s been the stronger postseason performer. Both have rings. Matt was better in high school, college, and early in the NFL. And he’s outperformed Rodgers the past four years.”
