Lions Show Ben Johnson’s Legacy Remains in Detroit After His Departure

The Detroit Lions have endured a lengthy offseason, with one of the most notable departures being offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. In January, he took the head coaching job with the Chicago Bears, prompting the Lions to restructure their offensive coaching staff.

This led to John Morton being brought in as the new offensive coordinator on January 30. On Tuesday, Morton spoke about the offense, making it clear that not many changes are in store.

“I’m not changing much. I mean, why?” Morton said.

He mentioned there will be slight modifications to the offense, mostly in the form of new plays using concepts from his past coaching experience.

Under Johnson, the Lions’ offense thrived, and Morton doesn’t want to disrupt that success. Last regular season, Detroit was second in total offense (409.5 yards) and passing offense (263.2), and ranked sixth in rushing (146.4). They also led the NFL in scoring offense (33.2 points).

The offense is driven by a dynamic backfield of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. The aerial game includes Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta. This core has built great chemistry, and Morton aims to preserve that.

Though Johnson won’t be calling plays, Detroit will still use the same offensive scheme. That continuity should benefit everyone, especially since the team hopes to maintain its momentum.

Altering terminology, structure, and schemes would take a lot of time. While these players are skilled enough to adapt quickly, Morton chose to stay the course. The Lions will stick with the current system and are confident they’ll remain a top offensive unit in 2025.
