Contract Holdout: Key Detroit Lions Defender May Be Signaling Possible Contract Dispute

The Detroit Lions are already facing a turbulent offseason, dealing with the departures of both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. On top of that, the team has had to overhaul several positions on both sides of the ball.

Now, another concern may be emerging as linebacker Alex Anzalone’s recent behavior raises questions about his future with the team.

Anzalone, who is entering the final year of his current deal with a $7.2 million cap hit, chose not to attend voluntary offseason workouts. There’s been no official word suggesting he’s pushing for a contract extension or planning to sit out, but his online activity paints a curious picture.

On his X (formerly Twitter) profile, Anzalone has been sharing content highlighting his importance to Detroit’s defensive success. This could be seen as a subtle way of reminding the organization—and the public—of the impact he’s made.

Last season, Anzalone played just 10 games due to a broken forearm, but prior to that, he logged two consecutive 100-tackle campaigns. Whenever healthy, he’s been a fixture in the lineup, starting every game he’s played since joining the Lions—57 in total.

As he approaches his 31st birthday in September, Anzalone might be looking to secure a final big payday. Meanwhile, Detroit may be cautious, wanting reassurance that he can stay on the field consistently before making any long-term financial commitments.
