Jared Goff’s remarks about the Lions’ new offensive coordinator will boost fans’ confidence.
With Ben Johnson departing this offseason, it initially looked like the Detroit Lions might lose what had been their greatest asset in 2024 — their offense. Known for its creativity, the offense thrived under Johnson’s playcalling and head coach Dan Campbell’s bold approach. A big reason for that success was the steady performance of Jared Goff all season long.
Now, Goff and the offensive core are adjusting to John Morton’s leadership on that side of the ball. Though the new offensive coordinator said earlier in the offseason that he doesn’t intend to overhaul Detroit’s system, it’s expected that any new OC will naturally bring his own approach to the playbook.
That approach is already receiving positive feedback from the offense’s key figure — Goff.
After Friday’s practice, and according to Jeff Risdon of USA Today, Goff told reporters that he’s been happy with the concepts Morton has brought into the offense during OTAs.
“To be honest, even if we had kept the same offense, you’d still see some new things. There are always little tweaks,” Goff said. “But yes, he’s adding his own touch to it and has been doing well so far.”
He continued, “Parts of it feel new, and some parts are familiar. He has a deep background and ideas he prefers, and since he was around during our success last year, there’s plenty of that still here — with some added elements.” This echoes Morton’s earlier point about keeping the foundation intact.
With Goff approaching his 30th birthday at the start of the season, he still has plenty of gas in the tank thanks to his experience. His continued growth alongside a new coordinator and a strong supporting cast should keep Detroit competitive, especially if Morton continues to earn Goff’s trust at this rate.
