The Detroit Lions were considered the top team in the NFC for much of the 2024 NFL season and seemed destined for a Super Bowl run before being stunned by the Washington Commanders in the playoffs.
Detroit boasted one of the league’s deepest and most complete rosters, but now faces new challenges as it prepares for the 2025 season.
The Lions lost both their offensive and defensive coordinators, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, during the offseason, along with several key contributors on both offense and defense.
Although the Lions still have a strong and skilled roster, the NFC figures to be even more competitive, making it crucial for Detroit to maintain its high level of play.
Their offense remains one of the most dangerous in the NFL, led by star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who recently pointed out a teammate he’s particularly excited about.
“A guy I’m really excited for is Sam LaPorta,” St. Brown said, via John Maakaron of SI.com. “Not to take away from last year—he’s a baller—but this year, he’s out there making plays every day. He’s going to break out.”
LaPorta had a standout rookie campaign with Detroit, and while the tight end seemed ready to build on it, his second season didn’t quite match the expectations.
With wide receiver Jameson Williams and running back Jahmyr Gibbs stepping up, LaPorta’s opportunities were more limited, but he remains a key weapon in Detroit’s loaded offense.
