Barry Sanders to Feature in A&E Documentary Unrelated to Football

Detroit Lions Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders will appear in an upcoming documentary on A&E, but it’s not related to his football career.

At 56 years old, Sanders will discuss a heart health scare he experienced last June in a film titled “The Making of a Heart Attack,” which will premiere Saturday, June 14 at 1:00 p.m. on A&E.

In the special, Sanders shares his experience during Father’s Day weekend and is joined by four other individuals who have suffered a heart attack or stroke, to explore hidden dangers, long-term effects, and key takeaways for viewers.

Sanders had kept details of his condition private last year. This new documentary may offer insight into what he went through. At the time, he made the following public statement.

“I had a heart-related health scare. It caught me off guard and reminded me how crucial it is to monitor our health, even when we feel okay. I’m thankful to the outstanding doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers who gave me the care I needed.”

The goal of the A&E documentary is to raise awareness around heart attack and stroke warning signs.

“ The emotional stories show how quickly these events can occur, often triggered by things like heredity and lifestyle, which can lead to elevated levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL-C),” A&E shared. “Because spotting the risk factors is key to taking preventive steps.”

The Lions retired Sanders’ iconic No. 20 jersey back in 2004, the same year he entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
