New Detroit Tiger Connected to Detroit Lions

New Detroit Tigers infielder Jahmai Jones has ties to the Detroit Lions and made a memorable debut in the city his family once called home.

Pinch-hitting in the eighth inning of Detroit’s Friday night game against the Chicago Cubs, Jones crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a solo homer. Just hours before, he found out he was promoted from Triple-A Toledo to join the major league roster.

It was a meaningful moment for Jones, not only because it was his second career home run. His family has strong Detroit roots, with his father Andre (1992) and brother T.J. (2015-18) both having played for the Lions in their NFL careers.

Because of this, he was able to continue a family tradition rooted in Motown.

“Obviously, Detroit means a lot to me because of the family connections,” Jones said, via the Detroit Free Press. “So being able to do this myself and add to that legacy is everything I hoped for.”

J ones added another contribution on Saturday, hitting a single in his second at-bat during a 6-1 loss to the Cubs.

Saturday marked the 71st game of his career, which has stretched across parts of five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees, and now the Detroit Tigers.
