The Lions could use a boost in public perception. It’s been a rough offseason in Detroit, and although they’re still considered the NFC North frontrunners as camp nears, their lead feels slimmer than it’s been in a couple of years. Ironically, the division’s current feel-good team is the one that’s craving a spark.
And what lifts spirits more than a splashy trade for a big-name player at a key position? Is it essential? Not really. Is it likely? Not quite. But who cares? The Lions could easily shift the narrative away from Ben Johnson (or was it Bob?) with one headline-grabbing move for a semi-star pass rusher — and Bleacher Report has an ideal candidate: Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
“Trading Kayvon Thibodeaux has seemed logical ever since the Giants picked Abdul Carter to pair with Brian Burns. Of course, stacking quality pass-rushers isn’t a problem, so maybe New York hangs onto its 2022 top pick. Still, with holes in other spots, flipping Thibodeaux for help elsewhere could be wise, especially if the Giants are in the playoff hunt near the deadline. That’s plausible, especially if Russell Wilson bounces back and Malik Nabers flourishes.
If so, the trade market could again feature Washington, Green Bay, and Detroit. Thibodeaux would be a fallback option since he’s not as proven as Hendrickson. But Detroit has more cap room than Washington and might feel pressure to spend to stay competitive in the division.”
Realistically, it’s doubtful Thibodeaux gets dealt — recent Super Bowl trends show how critical it is to rush with four. Still, it’s a fun scenario. The Lions (allegedly) spent the offseason hunting for a standout edge to pair with Aidan Hutchinson and, well, came up empty. But what if they were just setting the stage for a splashier, midseason blockbuster? That possibility hadn’t crossed my mind — I figured the front office just missed its shot.
