As anticipated, the Detroit Lions will get an early jump on training camp, ahead of every team but one. Earlier this spring, the team chose to skip two weeks of OTAs and three mandatory minicamp sessions to make room for playing in an added preseason matchup.
“The league year started a week later than usual for some reason. Along with that, we’ve got the Hall of Fame Game. With both factors combined, the offseason got pushed, and bringing players back a week early—just didn’t sit right. I didn’t think it was fair to our team,” said head coach Dan Campbell.
To make up for the time lost, the Lions are beginning training camp several days before all other teams—except the Los Angeles Chargers, their Hall of Fame Game opponent. Lions’ rookies report on July 16, and veterans arrive on July 19.
As shown in the chart below, that gives Detroit a three-day advantage over the rest of the league—essentially replacing this spring’s skipped minicamp.
Earlier this week, the team revealed 10 training camp sessions that will be open to fans. These practices begin on July 26.
