After a standout regular season, the Detroit Lions, led by head coach Dan Campbell, were among the NFL’s top teams in 2024. However, their promising campaign ended abruptly with a playoff loss to a surging Washington Commanders squad. The early exit has only intensified Detroit’s desire to bounce back stronger in the upcoming season.
Heading into 2025, the Lions appear poised for a serious championship push. Their roster is stacked with talent, yet there’s still room for improvement — especially when it comes to the pass rush.
Detroit currently plans to start Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport at defensive end. While both players are capable, their depth at the position isn’t particularly deep. Josh Paschal and Al-Quadin Muhammad provide some support, but the team might benefit from adding another experienced pass rusher to the mix.
To that end, NFL insider Carmen Vitali of Fox Sports recently recommended that Detroit consider signing Matthew Judon, a four-time Pro Bowler who remains available on the free-agent market.
Vitali pointed out that easing Hutchinson back into action — particularly following his injury — could be crucial, and adding a proven veteran like Judon would help shoulder the load early in the season. Additionally, relying on Davenport’s health is risky given his recent history, making extra depth even more valuable.
Judon, who spent the 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons, wasn’t at his peak but still produced solid numbers. In 17 appearances, he recorded 41 tackles, 5.5 sacks, one interception, a touchdown on defense, and five pass breakups. Over his career, he’s amassed 72 sacks — proof of his long-term effectiveness on the edge.
While no longer at his absolute prime, Judon still has enough left in the tank to make a difference. If Detroit wants to bolster its defensive front with a battle-tested playmaker, he could be the perfect piece to add versatility, leadership, and depth.
