Lions’ Latest Addition Already Proving Worthwhile

The Detroit Lions boast one of the deepest rosters in the NFL heading into the 2025 campaign. Because of that, they didn’t need to go on a spending spree in free agency like other teams. While that may have disappointed fans hoping for a splashy signing, the additions they made were still meaningful—especially considering the team had 13 players finish last year on injured reserve.

In a situation like Detroit’s, even a lower-profile signing carries weight. One such player is already showing early signs of promise. Though he didn’t lock down a starting job during OTAs, his early contributions could help prevent the setbacks that derailed the Lions’ 2024 postseason run.

Avonte Maddox joined Detroit in March on a modest one-year, $1.4 million deal. At 29, the former Eagle was coming off two down years, but his ability to play multiple positions in the secondary made him a worthwhile gamble. He brings experience at slot corner and both safety roles.

That versatility matters for a Lions secondary that saw Ifeatu Melifonwu leave in free agency. With Brian Branch splitting time nearly evenly between the slot (31.3%) and safety (32.6%) last season, Detroit needs someone who can shift around the defense seamlessly. Maddox has made a good early impression in that regard.

“Glad we got those guys,” head coach Dan Campbell said of Maddox and fellow free agent DJ Reed. “They’re going to fit right in with us.”

Defensive backs coach Jim O’Neil echoed those sentiments, especially regarding Maddox’s hybrid skill set. “We obviously lost [Melifonwu] and we gained Avonte Maddox,” O’Neil said. “Avonte will be an inside guy, just like he’s been his whole career—nickel and safety. That’s what he did for years in Philly.”

Having someone who can deliver different looks on defense is a plus, and the Lions already have a strong nickel option in Amik Robertson. But it also adds crucial depth in case of injuries—something they lacked when it mattered most last year.

Maddox may not suddenly become a Pro Bowler in Detroit. Still, if he performs steadily in a key rotational role, his signing will prove to be one of the savvier moves of the offseason.
