Lions Could Have a Hidden Gem Ready to Shine Bright in 2025

If you’ve spent this summer stressing over the Lions’ offensive line, this post is for you. If you’ve been overwhelmed trying to stay calm or find peace through deep breathing, you’re not alone—this offseason hasn’t been kind, with nearly half the offensive core gone for various reasons. It’s been pretty rough.

But some hope is peeking through the digital clouds. Pro Football Focus recently released a list highlighting one breakout candidate from every NFL team—and yes, the Lions made the cut. And better yet, their pick was an offensive lineman! Normally, that wouldn’t cause much excitement, but under current circumstances, we’ll gladly take the win.

“With Zeitler now in Tennessee, Detroit’s depth at guard clearly took a blow. Still, thanks to Mahogany’s rookie showing, the Lions can feel pretty good about their guard situation.

The late-round pick impressed during limited 2024 snaps, earning a 91.5 PFF grade over 144 plays at both guard spots. He also placed in the 99th percentile for pass-blocking in true pass sets and 97th for avoiding poorly graded run blocks, showcasing a balanced skill set. With Frank Ragnow now retired, the Lions are down two starting interior linemen.

But GM Brad Holmes has set the stage for Mahogany and rookie Tate Ratledge to play key roles. And with O-line coach Hank Fraley’s knack for developing stars, Mahogany may be the next breakout name in Detroit.”

I can’t say I fully understand every PFF stat, but being in the 97th percentile definitely seems promising. Losing two starting interior linemen in a single offseason hurts—but if Mahogany and Ratledge live up to their billing, Dan Campbell and Fraley’s coaching legacy could soar.

The Lions desperately need someone to step up in 2025, and if that surprise spark comes from the O-line, well, that’s just the most Detroit thing imaginable. I’m not saying I’m emotionally invested in Mahogany’s breakout season—but yeah, that’s exactly what I’m saying.
