Kelly Stafford Gets Candid About Why She Initially Hesitated to Sign a Prenup With NFL Star Matthew Stafford
Kelly Stafford has always been outspoken about her NFL quarterback husband, Matthew Stafford, and this time is no exception. On a recent episode of her podcast, the 36-year-old reflected on a challenging conversation she had with Matthew about a prenuptial agreement, revealing intimate details of their arrangement.
Before she agreed to sign the prenup, Kelly admitted she felt hesitant. “I had been with my husband for a while, but I was still young and didn’t fully understand what it meant,” she explained on her podcast.
“We had brought up prenups before we even got engaged. I was really inexperienced and thought, ‘It’s like preparing for divorce before the wedding. I’m not comfortable with that,’” she added.
But with time and deeper thought, Kelly’s opinion began to change.
“Then I had to consider the other side of it—if we don’t divorce, it won’t ever matter. So why wouldn’t I just go along with it?” she reflected.
Kelly shared that Matthew made sure the agreement was “very fair” for both of them, saying the NFL star was “extremely generous in the process.”
As their discussion went on, Kelly—who has often spoken about her husband’s NFL journey—acknowledged that prenups tend to have a “bad reputation.”
However, after rethinking the matter, she saw that prenups can help couples “set the terms if a divorce were to happen.”
“Most people don’t realize that the state actually has control over these things,” she said. “It’s smarter to create your own contract than leave it up to the government.”
Because signing the prenup made her uneasy at first, Kelly said they started drafting the agreement right after getting engaged.
“What helped a lot was starting on it right after we got engaged,” Kelly explained. “I told him, ‘I don’t want to be thinking about this near the wedding.’ I had such negative feelings about it back then.”
She added, “I was certain I loved him and he loved me. If this was necessary, then that was fine with me.”
It’s no surprise to fans that Kelly would open up about her prenup with Matthew—she’s long been a vocal supporter of him since his NFL debut.
In November 2022, per E! News, Kelly opened up after Matthew entered concussion protocol for the first time.
“If you’ve listened to my podcast, you know how important this issue is to me. Head injuries aren’t a joke… I just hope football starts to care more and prioritize research,” she said on social media.
“And no, I’m not okay,” she added. “I’m feeling everything—anger, fear, sadness, exhaustion… all of it.”
Her post came shortly after she criticized the NFL for allowing turf fields, which she says put players at risk for injury.
“If the NFL won’t take action or the owners won’t invest, then at least guarantee the contracts—so if someone gets hurt because of poor conditions, they’re covered,” she stated.
That wasn’t the first time Kelly challenged the league. Earlier in 2025, she expressed frustration when the Rams’ Wild Card game against the Vikings was set for a Monday night, calling it “ridiculous.”
“The fact that it’s on a Monday really ticks me off,” she said. “That means less recovery time for the next game. I hate the waiting, and now we’re the last game—super annoying.”
