Sorry about that’ – Matthew Stafford in awkward ESPYs moment as teleprompter glitch disrupts speech

It was an unfortunate moment for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and Olympic hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, as they became part of one of the most uncomfortable segments of the evening.

While on stage to present the ESPY for Gatorade’s Best Male and Female High School Players of the Year, a technical malfunction impacted the teleprompter just before they could begin.

.Stafford stepped up and addressed the situation, letting the crowd know the prompter had failed.

“Can we fix the prompter?” Stafford asked, chuckling. “We’re looking at a black and white screen, sorry about that America — there you go.”

Eventually, the awards were presented to Duke basketball recruit Cameron Boozer—son of NBA All-Star Carlos Boozer—and BYU Track & Field commit Jane Hedengren.

Both were chosen from 11 national finalists, themselves selected from 610 State Player of the Year honorees.

This award has honored many notable athletes, including McLaughlin-Levrone, WNBA star Paige Bueckers, and NBA talents Cooper Flagg and LeBron James.

In other ESPYs moments, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Oklahoma City claimed two major honors: Best Male Athlete and Best NBA Player, capping a historic MVP, Finals MVP, and championship season.

Ilona Maher, USA rugby standout and viral TikTok star, earned the Best Breakthrough Athlete award, while Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever won Best WNBA Player.

In the NFL category, the Philadelphia Eagles received Best Team honors after winning Super Bowl LIX, and star running back Saquon Barkley was named Best NFL Player.

However, the night wasn’t without drama, as host Shane Gillis stirred controversy with jokes about six-time Super Bowl champ Bill Belichick and his relationship with Jordon Hudson.

Belichick, 49 years older than his girlfriend, was targeted in Gillis’ roast, drawing gasps for remarks about their age difference and crude humor.
