As the Detroit Lions look to build on last season’s success, the team will depend heavily on big-time performances from key offensive players. With a Super Bowl in sight, each player’s development becomes essential, and head coach Dan Campbell made it clear that wide receiver Jameson Williams has caught his attention.
During Saturday’s training camp session, Campbell spoke with Tom Pelissero and was asked about Williams’ progress. The Lions coach quickly noted the “growth” he’s witnessed from the 24-year-old, especially under the guidance of wide receivers coach Scottie Montgomery.
“Yeah, growth. Growth and development. He’s heading into year four, and you can see a far more refined player, a more mature guy,” Campbell said. “He’s now leading the younger players, and his route work—Scottie’s done a fantastic job—his routes have improved a lot. The precision, the burst, his posture, he’s recognizing his strengths and how to use them. And we’re still getting physical play from him—he’ll block and cover. It’s really exciting to watch his progress.”
In 2024, Williams posted his first 1,000-yard season, finishing with 58 receptions and seven touchdowns, showcasing his emerging star potential.
Going into the 2025 season, Williams is under pressure as one of Detroit’s go-to weapons, joining Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, and others. Campbell’s Saturday praise wasn’t new either—he spoke highly of Williams’ “versatility” during OTAs on May 30.
“There’s just so much [Jameson Williams] can do,” Campbell noted. “He’s gotten stronger; he’s exactly where we hoped he’d be. He’s been here grinding, improving. We expect a massive year from him. He’s one of the guys we’re counting on. All he has to do is stay locked in and keep working like this.”
Either way, Williams and the Lions are eager to bounce back after a frustrating playoff loss to the Washington Commanders, despite finishing 15-2 and topping the NFC North.
