The Detroit Lions’ defense could significantly improve this season with new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard at the helm.
Cornerbacks Amik Robertson and Terrion Arnold shared after Saturday’s practice that Sheppard’s leadership is relatable and that he looks like he could still be playing, thanks to his football IQ and physicality.
Former DC Aaron Glenn brought energy, but Sheppard may bring even more fire than the now-New York Jets head coach.
“We’re expected to play at a high level. Anything less is unacceptable, and my players know it—it’s the standard,” Sheppard said. “That standard’s already been established, and we’re here to raise it. I’m not putting goals or expectations out there.”
During the early days of training camp, the defense has shown speed, aggression, and intensity in their play.
“I know what we have in the room, and I believe if we attack each day—truly chase growth, not just use coach-speak—we can become a dominant group,” Sheppard added. “But there’s a lot of growth ahead before we reach that point in September.”
Aidan Hutchinson leads Detroit’s defense, but the group also includes several young talents still in development.
“You’ve got a guy like Aidan Hutchinson aiming for an All-Pro season,” said Sheppard. “Then there’s someone like Ahmed (Hassanein), who’s still figuring out basic concepts. Everyone’s on their own path, and it’s up to us coaches to help each one hit that level expected of players like Aidan and Brian Branch.”
