Newcastle United are now only a day away from their Premier League opener against Aston Villa at Villa Park, and the Alexander Isak transfer saga still rumbles on. At present, it seems Eddie Howe’s men could be without their star striker, which would be a major setback.
Aaron Ramsdale, Anthony Elanga, and Malick Thiaw might be involved to some extent, with Newcastle eager for a strong start to the 2025/26 season. The Magpies know that beginning well is vital, especially as they will once more be competing in the Champions League this term.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle might fine Isak if he rules himself out of the clash with Villa this weekend. The report states that the Swedish forward is currently not training with the senior squad as he pushes for a transfer to Liverpool.
The club have yet to issue a fine for his absence from pre-season matches, after Newcastle previously rejected an offer from Liverpool earlier in the summer. Isak has not trained with his teammates since they returned from the pre-season trip to the Far East.
Even though Newcastle remain in control, there are several possible ways this ongoing saga might develop.
ChronicleLive comments: “It seems very improbable that Isak will feature for Newcastle United this weekend, which only fuels speculation about his long-term future at St. James’ Park.”
Young Newcastle prospect Antonio Cordero has spoken publicly after sealing a season-long loan switch to Belgian club KVC Westerlo, just months after finalising his permanent move to St. James’ Park.
The talented Spanish winger had left Malaga for Newcastle, with Spanish media suggesting Howe’s side intended to loan him to a European competition side.
“I’m thrilled to be here, it’s a fresh project for me. You must give everything and work hard. It’s a valuable learning stage. The game here is a bit more rugged than in Spain, more demanding and physical,” he told Cope Málaga.
“I’m only carrying out instructions. The clubs decide, and if they believe a loan is the right path for the first year, I’ll accept it, honour it, and give my best effort.”
The Spanish youth international has moved with his family to Belgium in preparation for the season. He added: “My family is always alongside me, they’ve always been supportive, present during good moments, and especially during the difficult ones.”
Chronicle Live notes: “Newcastle made the perfect choice loaning Yankuba Minteh to Feyenoord in the Netherlands. They will now hope Cordero’s temporary move proves equally successful in nurturing the young attacker.”.
