Apologies’ – Newcastle United board issue statement on transfer window and Liverpool pursuit

Newcastle United begin their Premier League season at Aston Villa today following a chaotic build-up.

Jamie Reuben expressed gratitude to Newcastle United fans while stressing that “everyone worked tirelessly” to prepare the team in the best way for the campaign ahead.

The Magpies start their Premier League run today after a dramatic off-season. Early attempts to land major transfer targets collapsed as several big names rejected a move to Tyne side.

Adding to the problems, top forward Alexander Isak has gone missing as he tries to engineer a departure. Liverpool are positioned to make a deal happen, having already seen a £110million offer turned away.

Supporters have, on occasions, shown their anger at the lack of clarity from leadership. Eddie Howe has had to shoulder responsibility with the media throughout the difficult summer spell.

But co-owner Jamie Reuben has now used social media to recognise the unseen work at the club. Newcastle enjoyed a stronger week before the season opener after securing Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey.

“Certainly an eventful summer and I apologise for not communicating directly more often but everyone at ownership level worked hard to give us the strongest season possible. Safe travels to Villa Park and Up The Mags.”

As anticipated, Howe fielded a stream of questions on Isak’s situation before the clash with Aston Villa. But nothing has altered since the Sela Cup games last weekend.

“Alex’s situation has stayed the same for some time, and that continues to be the case,” Howe said. “I’ve always had a good relationship with Alex. Every player needs that. I treat that relationship with real importance.

“I must work very closely with him for his benefit. There has been no development, all of my concentration is on training, Villa, and the transfer picture.”
