Liverpool’s Conor Bradley congratulates Sunderland’s Trai Hume on new contract ahead of West Ham match.

Liverpool defender Conor Bradley has praised his Northern Ireland teammate, Trai Hume, after the Sunderland right-back signed a new long-term contract with the club.

Bradley, who has played alongside Hume in the Northern Ireland senior squad, expressed his support by reacting to Sunderland’s Instagram post announcing the deal with clapping emojis. This public gesture of encouragement came just days before Sunderland’s return to the Premier League.

The two players share a strong bond within the national team and often speak highly of each other’s achievements. Bradley’s post further highlights the respect Hume has earned among his peers following his impressive rise since joining Sunderland in January 2022.

Hume’s new deal, signed earlier this week, runs until the summer of 2030. While the contract was announced a few days ago, it has continued to generate excitement, particularly given the timing—just before Sunderland’s first Premier League match in eight years.

Hume, 23, has been consistent for both club and country, attracting attention from top clubs, including Bundesliga side Wolfsburg. However, Hume has made it clear that he wants to remain at Sunderland to prove himself in the Premier League.

After signing the contract, he said: “The club has shown great faith in me with this new deal in the Premier League, which is where I’ve always wanted to be. I joined Sunderland in League One, and all I wanted was to play football.

“I wasn’t thinking about promotions or the Premier League back then, but this club is huge, and with that comes great opportunities. It’s been a rapid rise through the divisions, and I’ve enjoyed every moment, so I’m thrilled to extend my stay and keep building memories here.”

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman referred to Hume’s journey as a perfect example of the opportunities available at the club, attributing his success to his “application and dedication.

” He said: “Trai’s story at Sunderland showcases the chances that exist here, and what can happen when you take them. He came with the goal of establishing himself in the team, and now he’s a Premier League player, which speaks volumes about his hard work and commitment.

He played a crucial role in our promotion last season, and his passion for Sunderland is clear every time he steps on the pitch. We’re thrilled he’s committed to his future here and can’t wait to see him take this next step.”

Hume is expected to start for Régis Le Bris as Sunderland face West Ham United at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, with the right-back set to play a key role in the club’s first Premier League match in over 3,000 days.
