Spicy Liverpool showdown in sight for Howe as new developments on Isak surface.

Eddie Howe is eagerly anticipating a ‘spicy’ showdown with Liverpool on August 25th, while hoping the uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak is cleared up before the reigning champions arrive at St James’ Park.

Speaking to TNT Sports following the draw, Howe was asked about the situation with Isak, and responded: “It’s not an easy question to answer.

“I want it resolved soon because it’s a constant distraction around us, instead of allowing us to focus on the game itself and everything required to deliver a strong performance.

“Today the squad was able to block that out and deliver. We’ve done that often, and we’ll need to keep doing it.

“We’d rather not have that ongoing story hanging over us, but what happens, happens.”

Relations between Newcastle and Liverpool have been frosty in recent weeks, with both fanbases clashing on social media as the Isak drama unfolded.

With the fixture fast approaching, no follow-up offer from Liverpool, and Isak not featuring in training lately, it seems unlikely he’ll take part – for either side – in the St James’ Park clash.

Still, the match is shaping up to be a thriller, with regional pride on the line following a heated standoff between the north west and north east.

“I think it’s always fiery,” Howe said of matches with Liverpool. “There’s a real history with this fixture. It’s delivered so much in the Premier League era.

“We’re excited for it. We respect their quality, but off today’s display, we hope we’re ready to meet the challenge.”
