Newcastle United look to have received encouragement in their chase for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, with the London side now weighing up possible replacements.
It has been a disruptive summer away from the pitch for Eddie Howe’s men amid the ongoing Alexander Isak saga, with the Swede still absent as he attempts to engineer a switch to Liverpool before the window closes. Yet, as repeatedly highlighted in recent weeks, Newcastle landing adequate cover for both Isak and the departed Callum Wilson will be vital to allowing any departure.
Just like Isak, Wissa has also refused to play as he seeks to seal a transfer to St James’ Park and realise his dream of competing in the Champions League. On Monday, the 28-year-old deleted all mention of Brentford from his Instagram and unfollowed the club, thereby making his stance on the matter unmistakably clear.
After already offloading Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United earlier this summer, Brentford appear reluctant to lose Wissa unless they can secure a replacement first. As per French outlet Le10Sport, that may involve a surprise swoop for their former striker, Neal Maupay.
The French attacker is currently with Marseille in Ligue 1 but is tipped to move on this summer. Reports suggest Brentford have now joined the chase for the 29-year-old and contacted Marseille regarding terms of a possible deal, though no official offer has been made yet.
Should they make an approach, Brentford may not have a clear path, with Lille, Udinese and Genoa also linked with the forward.
Since moving to Marseille in the summer of 2024, initially on loan from Everton, Maupay has netted four goals and provided four assists in 24 outings across all competitions. His earlier stint at Brentford proved more productive, though, yielding 49 goals and 17 assists in 126 matches.
