Newcastle United endured a late loss to Liverpool on Monday as debutant Rio Ngumoha struck to seal a 3-2 victory. Yet, dropping the point was only the second-worst outcome of the night for Eddie Howe.
Four players from the starting XI are now doubts for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Leeds. Anthony Gordon saw red for a heavy challenge on Virgil Van Dijk and is expected to serve a three-match suspension.
Three further issues came through injuries, with Fabian Schar substituted following a concussion. He stands the best chance of returning in time for Leeds, although his recovery over the next few days will determine that.
The major concerns are with midfield pair Sandro Tonali and Joelinton. Tonali left the pitch clutching his shoulder, while Joelinton limped off minutes later with muscular discomfort.
Afterwards, Howe admitted both situations “don’t look good” and that “they both look threatening for us in the sense they could be out for a while”. As a result, Newcastle may turn to the market in the window’s closing stages to bring in cover.
The Magpies are weighing up a move for Atlético Madrid’s Conor Gallagher to offset the loss of Tonali and Joelinton. Graeme Bailey of TBR Football confirmed multiple clubs admire Gallagher, stressing, “don’t rule out Newcastle” and “keep an eye on Newcastle”.
The England international had been monitored by Newcastle earlier, but interest has risen sharply after the injury blows. Atlético’s valuation is unclear, though they invested £33m to sign him last summer.
On wages, Gallagher earns just over £150,000 a week. Newcastle already deal with his representatives, Elite Management Agency, who also manage defender Dan Burn.
Several Premier League clubs want Gallagher, with Newcastle and Everton currently strongest contenders, while West Ham, Tottenham, Manchester United and Crystal Palace are also circling.
Each potential suitor views Gallagher differently, underlining his adaptability. Spurs and United are considering him primarily as a defensive midfielder, with Tottenham monitoring him should Yves Bissouma depart. Last year Gallagher ranked among the top 15% for ball recoveries and tackle success, proving his strength in disrupting opposition play.
Crystal Palace see him more creatively, perhaps as a replacement for Eberechi Eze after his Arsenal switch. During his Palace loan, Gallagher notched 13 goal contributions in 39 outings, showing his attacking qualities when used further forward.
Newcastle’s preferred midfield of Joelinton, Tonali and Bruno Guimarães blends defensive and attacking attributes. Gallagher, offering both, could prove the ideal stand-in if their injuries are significant, while also supplying valuable depth once the trio return fit.
