Freshman QB set to lead BYU in clash with Portland State
When BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier steps onto the field against Portland State in Provo, Utah, on Saturday, he will become the first true freshman signal-caller ever to start a season opener for the Cougars.
Bachmeier made the move from Stanford after spring practices and seized the chance to compete for the top spot when returning starter Jake Retzlaff departed the program and transferred to Tulane.
He secured the role for the opener by outplaying McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourguet during fall camp. His brother Tiger, a wide receiver, also joined the roster after transferring alongside him.
Another brother, Hank, spent six seasons as a starting quarterback with Boise State, Louisiana Tech, and Wake Forest.
“He’s stepped up well as a leader and built strong connections with his teammates,” BYU coach Kalani Sitake said about Bear Bachmeier. “I think he’s prepared. Based on his attitude, his smarts, and what he’s absorbed, he’s excited. He’s ready to go.”
Bachmeier is just the eighth quarterback in school history to ever start a game as a true freshman and the first since Zach Wilson in 2018. His adjustment may be quicker since the Cougars return both their leading receiver and leading rusher from last year.
Chase Roberts finished 2023 with 52 catches for 854 yards and four scores. LJ Martin shined in the backfield with 718 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 5.24 yards per attempt.
Though new to college football, Bachmeier has impressed teammates with confidence and leadership.
“His mindset throughout camp hasn’t been like that of a freshman,” Roberts said.
Portland State enters with the challenge of trying to defeat an FBS opponent for the first time since 2015. The Vikings opened last week and were routed 42-0 by Tarleton State.
Three different quarterbacks played for Portland State, but the Vikings never gained momentum on offense or defense. The trio combined for three interceptions — one taken back for a score — while their defense allowed 301 rushing yards.
“They shut down some of the things we usually do,” Portland State coach Bruce Barnum said. “But the opportunities we did have on offense, we couldn’t make use of.”
BYU holds a 19-0 record all-time against FCS competition and hasn’t fallen to a non-FBS program since 1960. The Cougars previously defeated the Vikings 20-6 in their lone matchup back in 2017
