The forward has yet to make his Magpies bow since arriving from Brentford in the summer, after suffering a knee issue while on duty with DR Congo last month.
Wissa has begun light training sessions this week and is expected to increase the intensity of his recovery programme over the next seven days.
Newcastle’s medical team are optimistic he will be fit to return shortly after the break, potentially in time for the clash at Brighton on October 18.
“I believe we’re still aligned with the original timeline, which was after the next international break,” explained Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.
“He hasn’t stepped onto the grass for full sessions yet, so we’ve not integrated him into team training. But for now, that remains the plan, and we’ll monitor closely.”
Howe also confirmed that Tino Livramento faces around eight weeks out after sustaining his own knee problem in last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. While serious, the injury is not an ACL tear, though he is set to miss close to ten matches.
“From the consultation [with the specialist] yesterday, we’re thinking Tino will be out roughly six-to-eight weeks, which feels more positive than our immediate fears after the game, when we thought it could be several months,” Howe added.
“We’re now looking at the following international break, rather than this one, as a possible target for his return. It’s definitely a brighter outlook than what we first anticipated.”
