Lions’ David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs Match NFL Record in Victory Over Bengals

The Detroit Lions beat the Cincinnati Bengals 37-24 on Sunday, moving to 4-1 for the third straight season. Running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs made NFL history in the win, tying a long-standing league record for the Lions.

Since teaming up in 2023, Montgomery and Gibbs have arguably formed the NFL’s best backfield duo. During Sunday’s victory, they matched an NFL record for running back pairs scoring in the same game. The Lions’ dynamic duo has now each found the end zone in the same contest 14 times.

Their record equals that of former Dallas Cowboys teammates Emmitt Smith and Daryl Johnston. Smith and Johnston were a legendary tandem during the Cowboys’ dominant run through the 1990s.

Montgomery and Gibbs tie NFL record in Bengals win

Detroit tallied 118 total rushing yards in Sunday’s win over Cincinnati. It was a meaningful homecoming for native son David Montgomery, who paced the Lions’ ground attack with 18 carries for 65 yards and one touchdown.

Gibbs added 12 carries for 54 rushing yards, while also scoring on a receiving touchdown in the third quarter, finishing with two catches for 93 yards overall.

Montgomery even threw a touchdown pass to tight end Brock Wright during the second quarter. The game marked his first time playing in his hometown during his seven-year NFL career.

Many of Montgomery’s relatives attended the game, including his sister, who witnessed him play in person for the first time since surviving a serious car accident in February 2024.

With the NFL record now matched, there’s little doubt that Montgomery and Gibbs will soon break it, setting a new mark for running back duos scoring in the same game.

That record-breaking moment could come as soon as next Sunday night, when the Lions face the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

So far this season, Gibbs and Montgomery have scored in the same game twice — against the Chicago Bears and the Baltimore Ravens.
