The Detroit Lions secured an impressive victory during their Week 7 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Ford Field on Sunday, October 19. When the final whistle blew at the end of the fourth quarter, the Lions walked off the field with a 24-9 win and an improved 5-2 record heading into their bye week. That triumph also elevated the Detroit Lions to the top of the NFL Power Rankings, with both ESPN and the league’s official Week 8 list placing them at No. 1.
However, NFL games are filled with intensity and emotion, and the Lions-Buccaneers showdown was no different. Several heated moments occurred throughout the contest, and one of them resulted in a significant penalty for a Detroit Lions player from the league office.
Each week during the regular NFL season, the league hands out fines to players for conduct committed in the previous week’s matchups. The NFL explains on its official website that these disciplinary measures are “to protect players from unnecessary risk and maintain competitive balance and game integrity. The NFL and NFL Players Association have established a list of violations that can lead to accountability measures.” The updated list of fined players is released every Saturday afternoon.
I n the NFL’s Week 7 report, defensive end Tyrus Wheat was fined $5,722 for “unnecessary roughness” and “striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing.” Specifically, in this case, Wheat tripped Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield in the pocket while he was attempting to pass. During the game, officials did not flag the play as a foul against the Lions and instead credited Wheat with a sack. The league later corrected that oversight with the postgame fine.
According to the NFL, all fines are directed to the Professional Athletes Foundation to “assist former players in need,” and to the NFL Foundation to further support athlete health, safety, and wellness at all levels, including youth football and the communities that nurture the sport.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Rachaad White was also fined for his actions during the same game against Detroit. His penalty totaled $46,371 for “use of the helmet.”
As noted earlier, the Detroit Lions remain at the top of Week 8 power rankings from major NFL analysts and publications, which is an encouraging sign for the Motor City. ESPN lists the Lions as No. 1, as does the NFL’s own website.
In an article published Tuesday, October 21, Eric Edholm of NFL.com wrote, “Jared Goff’s interception before halftime helped give the Buccaneers points, but the Lions’ offense answered with a touchdown on their first drive of the third quarter, and the defense played outstandingly well all night under tough conditions.” He continued, “The Lions may have taken the Chiefs’ best shot in Week 6, but they unleashed their frustrations on a strong Bucs team they could face again come January.”
Fox Sports also ranked the Lions first in its Tuesday, October 21 feature. Writer Ralph Vacchiano said, “The Lions bounced back impressively from their loss in Kansas City with a statement win over the Bucs. They’re not flawless, but they’re versatile and might be the most complete squad in the NFL.”
The Detroit Lions’ upcoming matchup will be against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, November 2. The Vikings fell to the Chargers on Thursday, October 23, by a 37-10 margin and are struggling badly at the quarterback position — a situation that could further benefit the Lions.
