Washington LB Has Suspension Overturned Ahead of Detroit Game

The NFL has overturned the one-game suspension of Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu, allowing him to play in Sunday’s matchup against the Detroit Lions.

Following an appeal, the league announced late Tuesday that the suspension was replaced with a $100,000 fine instead.

Luvu had originally been suspended after officials determined he committed his third “hip-drop” tackle of the 2025 season during Washington’s Week 9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The league has been enforcing stricter penalties for these tackles — defined as when a defender grabs a ball carrier and drops his body weight onto the runner’s legs — after officially banning the maneuver in 2024 due to its high injury risk.

This isn’t Luvu’s first run-in with league discipline. Earlier this year, he was fined a combined $33,766 for two infractions in last season’s playoff game against Detroit — one for an illegal hit on quarterback Jared Goff during a pick-six and another for a hip-drop tackle on running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

Now in his eighth NFL season, Luvu has recorded 50 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble through nine games. His presence will be key for a Commanders squad currently trying to snap a four-game losing streak.
