Jameson Williams has kept a steady mindset all season, even during stretches when the ball rarely came his way. That patience paid off in a big way after his most explosive outing of the year.
The Detroit Lions wide receiver delivered a statement performance in Sunday’s 44–22 victory over the Washington Commanders, hauling in six receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown. Remarkably, five of those catches came in the third quarter — more than he’s managed in seven of his eight previous games this season.
“I’m the same player every single day, whether I’m getting targets or not,” Williams said after the win. “My routine doesn’t change — meetings, practice, game day. I don’t let that affect me. I just focus on making plays when my number’s called.”
Williams certainly made the most of those chances. He torched Washington’s defense with sharp cuts and quick bursts, turning short routes into highlight plays as defenders struggled to keep up.
Following their bye week, Detroit’s coaching staff emphasized the importance of getting Williams more involved in the offense. That approach has paid off — he posted four catches for 66 yards and a touchdown in the previous game, then raised the bar again against the Commanders.
One early play stood out: on third-and-6 in the first quarter, Williams caught a short pass and turned it into a long gain by burning past cornerback Trey Amos with his trademark speed.
“We expected a lot of man and match coverage,” Williams explained. “So our job was to create separation and run away from defenders. When you get man coverage, you’ve just got to break free — and the ball will be there.”
Sunday also marked a strategic shift, with head coach Dan Campbell taking over play-calling duties from offensive coordinator John Morton. Williams credited Campbell’s approach, saying it helped the Lions maintain control throughout the game, even though he hadn’t been told he’d see more targets.
Campbell praised Williams’ persistence and work ethic after the win. “He’s been grinding every day,” Campbell said. “We just hadn’t connected yet. But today, we got him going. Goff made the throws, and Jamo made the plays. His confidence is sky-high right now. He’s fully part of what we’re building.”
Quarterback Jared Goff echoed that sentiment, calling Williams’ performance “special” and describing how the offense kept feeding him as the game went on.
“To see him explode like that was awesome,” Goff said. “He’s one of the fastest guys in the league, and when you get him in space, he’s a cheat code. We’ve got to keep finding ways to do that.”
