Former Lions QB Matthew Stafford Reaches Another Major Career Milestone in His 17th NFL Season

Matthew Stafford, the longtime Detroit Lions quarterback turned Los Angeles Rams star, continues to climb the NFL’s all-time leaderboards as he shines in his 17th professional season.

The 2009 No. 1 overall pick added another impressive line to his résumé on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, throwing two touchdown passes in the first half — including the 400th passing touchdown of his career. The milestone came on a four-yard strike to tight end Davis Allen, officially making Stafford the ninth quarterback in NFL history to reach the 400-TD mark.

Earlier this year, Stafford passed Matt Ryan (381) to take sole possession of ninth place on the league’s all-time touchdown list. Next up on his radar are Ben Roethlisberger (418), Dan Marino (420), and Philip Rivers (421).

At 37 years old, Stafford is playing some of his best football in years. He’s currently on track for his first 4,000-yard season since 2021, which was his debut campaign with the Rams — the same year he led Los Angeles to a Super Bowl victory after being traded from Detroit for Jared Goff.

If he keeps up his current pace, Stafford could challenge his personal bests from 2011, when he threw for 5,038 yards and 41 touchdowns with the Lions. Through nine games this season, he’s already totaled 23 touchdowns, 2,320 passing yards, and just two interceptions.

Stafford began his NFL career as the Lions’ top pick in 2009 and went on to spend 12 seasons in Detroit, becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in both passing yards and touchdown passes. His continued success with the Rams only cements his reputation as one of the most productive quarterbacks of his generation.
