Dan Campbell defends tush push: says it’s up to opponents to figure out how to stop it
Lions head coach Dan Campbell has made it clear that he’s firmly against banning the tush push play — not just because of how effective it is for the Eagles, but because he believes in keeping the physical essence of football intact.
Speaking ahead of Detroit’s matchup with Philadelphia on Sunday, Campbell said he sees no reason to eliminate a play simply because one team has mastered it.“I’m a purist,” Campbell explained. “Once you start removing parts of the game, where does it stop? Next thing you know, we’re taking off the pads or cutting game time in half. I don’t want that. If a team has developed a skill or a strategy that works, then it’s everyone else’s responsibility to figure out how to defend it. It’s tough, it’s physical, and that’s what football should be.”
Campbell’s squad will have an opportunity to prove his point when they attempt to stop Philadelphia’s signature short-yardage play on Sunday night.
