Dan Campbell fired up as Frank Ragnow makes surprising return to Lions

Frank Ragnow’s comeback couldn’t have landed at a better moment for a Detroit Lions team pushing hard for a postseason spot.

If there’s a cliché that fits here, it’s the idea that a player can leave football, but football never really leaves him. That certainly seems true for Ragnow, who unexpectedly reversed his retirement and returned to Detroit’s roster.

Back in June, the longtime Lions center stepped away from the sport, citing the physical grind of the league and his desire to devote more time to his family. After seven seasons with Detroit, it appeared he was finished.

But only four months later, the pull of the game brought him back. It’s a situation reminiscent of Michael Corleone’s famous line in The Godfather: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.”

As soon as the news broke, head coach Dan Campbell didn’t hide his excitement. The Lions leader made it clear he’s thrilled to have the 29-year-old veteran anchoring the offensive line once again.
