Detroit Lions

Jared Goff takes responsibility for the Lions’ uneven offensive play in their Week 1 game.

In their Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, the Detroit Lions’ offense struggled significantly, despite securing a 26-20 overtime victory. The Lions’ attack fell short of their usual high standards, managing only 363 total yards.

Jared Goff, the team’s quarterback, acknowledged his own role in the lackluster performance, throwing for 217 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also narrowly avoided a second interception.

Goff admitted that the offense had several issues, including poor execution and operational problems, which he attributed to himself. He stated, “We kept making mistakes and I need to improve my cadence and overall operational smoothness.

Fixing these issues would address many of the problems we faced. Although we didn’t perform our best, a win is still a win.”

Despite the win, Goff recognized that the performance was below the team’s usual standards.

He noted, “There are many areas where we fell short, especially in terms of operational efficiency, which is my responsibility. While it was enough to win the game, it wasn’t up to our standards.”

Goff found some encouragement in the team’s ability to secure a win even when they didn’t play their best.

He compared the game to last year’s Week 1, where the team also won despite making mistakes. “Winning in overtime is special. We’ll look back and appreciate this win in the future,” Goff said.

This early-season win could prove crucial if the Lions and Rams face each other again in the playoffs.

Although Goff and the Lions have areas to improve, they are pleased to have achieved a victory under less-than-ideal conditions.
