Following Detroit’s narrow 29–24 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell didn’t waste time addressing the reality his team now faces.
Now in his fifth year leading Detroit, Campbell has guided the franchise to back-to-back postseason appearances in 2023 and 2024. This season, however, has proven far more challenging.
With the loss to Pittsburgh, the Lions find themselves in a precarious position as the regular season nears its end.
Speaking at his Monday press conference, Campbell shared the tone of his message to the locker room, according to ESPN reporter Erick Woodyard.
His focus was on urgency and accountability as the team prepares for the final stretch.
Woodyard noted that Campbell told the team to “move forward,” stressing that there is no time to dwell on disappointment.
Campbell explained that the coming days would be critical, emphasizing mental preparation, physical recovery, and rapid execution of the game plan. He made it clear that the team cannot expect sympathy from anyone and must be ready in every way—mentally, emotionally, and physically—by the time kickoff arrives later in the week.
What’s next for Detroit
Failing to reach the playoffs would be a major setback for Campbell and the organization, especially after recent postseason success. With only two games left on the schedule, Detroit must treat each remaining matchup with maximum urgency.
The Lions currently sit at 8–7, placing them third in the NFC North. They trail both the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears while staying ahead of the Minnesota Vikings. In the broader NFC picture, Detroit is positioned just outside the playoff field at eighth, sitting behind teams like Green Bay and San Francisco but ahead of Minnesota and Tampa Bay.
Detroit’s next challenge comes on the road against the Vikings, where the Lions will look to keep their postseason hopes alive. The Christmas Day matchup is set for December 25 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
