NFL Makes Final Call on Possible Discipline for Jared Goff After Disputed Finish

The Detroit Lions saw their postseason hopes officially end on Sunday, December 21, after falling at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers, led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Despite a strong effort, Detroit came up short in a 29–24 loss, eliminating them from contention for the 2025–26 playoffs.

The game’s conclusion quickly became a major talking point due to a baffling and controversial sequence in the final seconds. As time expired, officials initially ruled the game over following an offensive pass interference penalty. The call stemmed from a play in which Amon-Ra St. Brown was flagged for contact with Jalen Ramsey while running his route.

What followed only added to the confusion. After a brief review, officials appeared to suggest the touchdown stood—only for it to be waved off moments later. Fans were left scratching their heads, with one Lions supporter posting on X that they were completely unsure what had just happened at the end of the game.

Afterward, Lions quarterback Jared Goff addressed the chaotic finish, comments that raised questions about whether he might face disciplinary action from the league.

The NFL prohibits players from openly criticizing officiating decisions, but emotions often run high after games—especially ones with playoff implications.
Goff didn’t hold back entirely, calling the call a mistake while also acknowledging the difficulty of the officials’ job.

“The play where St. caught what we thought was a touchdown—that’s a bad call in my opinion,” Goff said. “But those things happen. These officials have a hard job, and they make calls that benefit us too. That one just didn’t go our way.”
Each week during the season, the NFL reviews player behavior and issues fines or other penalties when rules are violated.

According to the league’s official policies, these measures exist to maintain fairness, protect players, and uphold the integrity of the game. The NFL and the Players Association agree on enforcement standards before each season begins.

On Saturday, December 27, the league released its ruling regarding Goff’s remarks. The decision: no fine and no disciplinary action. Ultimately, the NFL opted to show leniency, recognizing the emotional nature of the moment and the widespread debate surrounding the call.

Goff Admits Confusion During Final Penalty
Goff also explained his mindset during the final play, admitting that he initially wasn’t sure which team the penalty was on.

“I knew there was a flag,” Goff said. “I was hoping it was on the defense, because if St. wasn’t down, that could mean another play—or even the win. Once it went the other way, that was it.”

With the season now over, the Lions turn their attention to the future. Tough decisions and reflection lie ahead as the franchise prepares for the 2026–27 season, hoping to build on the progress they were so close to capitalizing on just a year earlier.
