The Pittsburgh Steelers have chosen to stand behind DK Metcalf despite the controversy surrounding his recent suspension.
Earlier this month, Metcalf was disciplined by the NFL with a two-game ban following a confrontation with a Detroit Lions fan during Pittsburgh’s December 21 win. League officials ruled that Metcalf violated NFL rules prohibiting players from entering the stands or engaging with spectators on game day after video showed him striking toward a fan.
Initial reports suggested the suspension could have significant financial consequences for the wide receiver.
Because of the incident, Metcalf was believed to be at risk of losing as much as $45 million in future guaranteed money, in addition to forfeiting his remaining salary for the season.
However, that outcome will not come to pass. NFL insider Jay Glazer revealed that the Steelers have decided against voiding Metcalf’s guarantees.
Speaking on Fox NFL Kickoff, Glazer explained that Pittsburgh had the contractual right to reclaim Metcalf’s guaranteed money but chose not to exercise it.
“They could have taken back every dollar of his guarantees,” Glazer said. “Instead, the Steelers are sticking with him.
They want to show commitment to DK, even with something like this happening.”
As a result, Metcalf is expected to retain the $25 million fully guaranteed in 2026, along with an additional $20 million guaranteed for injury protection in 2027.
The suspension will still cost him financially, though. Metcalf is set to lose roughly $555,000 in salary due to missing two games.
With only one regular-season game remaining—against the Baltimore Ravens on December 4—Metcalf will sit out the rest of the year. He becomes eligible to return to the active roster on January 5.
Metcalf signed a four-year, $132 million contract extension with Pittsburgh in March following his trade from the Seattle Seahawks.
The incident itself was captured on a CBS broadcast during the second quarter of the Lions game. Footage showed Metcalf exchanging words with a fan wearing a blue wig before grabbing the individual’s jersey collar and throwing a punch. The swing appeared to make little or no contact.
In the aftermath, reports circulated claiming the fan had provoked Metcalf by using racial slurs, though no evidence was ever presented to support those allegations.
Days later, the fan involved—identified as Ryan Kennedy—held a press conference alongside his legal team to deny the claims. Kennedy and his attorneys said the accusations had spread widely online and caused serious personal harm.
“Being falsely labeled a racist is one of the most damaging accusations someone can face,” said Kennedy’s lawyer, Shawn Head. “It carries real-world consequences.”
Kennedy echoed that statement, saying plainly that no racial language or hate speech was used during the exchange.
Head added that legal options are being explored and said his team has reached out to Metcalf’s representatives, asking the player to publicly clarify that no racial slurs were heard.
“False claims of racist language cause real damage,” Head said. “Mr. Metcalf has the ability to correct the record and state clearly that he never heard anything like that from Mr. Kennedy.”
As of now, Metcalf has not publicly responded to those requests.
