Aaron Glenn continues major coaching shakeup, dismisses eighth Jets assistant

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn continued reshaping his coaching staff on Tuesday, cutting ties with yet another assistant from his initial group.

According to reports from NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Jets have dismissed offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand. Rapoport noted that Glenn and Engstrand held multiple discussions about Engstrand’s future responsibilities before ultimately deciding to move in different directions.

Glenn had reportedly begun exploring candidates for a senior offensive position, a move that would have reduced Engstrand’s role on the staff. Instead, the Jets opted for a complete separation. This decision brings the total number of assistants Glenn must replace to eight ahead of the 2026 season.

The overhaul began during the regular season, when defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was let go. After the season concluded, Glenn also moved on from pass game coordinator Scott Turner, assistant defensive backs coach Dre Bly, defensive assistants Alonso Escalante and Roosevelt Williams, linebackers coach Aaron Curry, and quarterbacks coach Charles London.

Glenn and Engstrand previously worked together in Detroit under Lions head coach Dan Campbell. Glenn served as Detroit’s defensive coordinator, while Engstrand held the role of pass game coordinator. When Glenn departed the Lions after the 2024 season to take over as Jets head coach, he brought Engstrand with him to run the offense.

Despite finishing 10th in the league in rushing yards, the Jets’ offense struggled mightily overall under Engstrand’s leadership. The team ranked near the bottom of the NFL in multiple key areas, including pass completions (29th), passing touchdowns (31st), total touchdowns (29th), and third-down efficiency (26th). New York also finished last in both passing yardage and red zone touchdown production.
